Det er ikke en fejl, vi selv kan sige os fri for, og så meget mere grund er der vel til at rette den:
The most frequent factual error perpetuated by the international and Indian press is that the Bombay film industry produces 800-1,000 films a year. The Bombay industry actually produces about 150-200 films a year. Feature films are produced in approximately 20 languages in India and there are multiple industries whose total output makes India the largest feature film-producing country in the world. The cities of Madras and Hyderabad are home to the Tamil and Telugu film industries which are as, or more prolific than the Bombay industry in terms of the number of films made per year.(Fra Tejaswini Ganti: Bollywood - a guidebook to popular Indian cinema, Routledge 2004, s. 3).
Ganti tilføjer dog, at "Hindi films, though comprising approximately 20 percent of total production, are the ones that circulate nationally and internationally, dominate the discourse about Indian cinema, and are regarded as the standard or archetype to follow or oppose".
Og det er da også netop hindifilmene, vi har koncentreret os om her - primært, fordi det er dem, det trods alt er til at få fat på, og fordi én gren af et stort træ trods alt kan være mere overskuelig end det hele på en gang.
Men næste gang, du hører at "Bollywood" producerer ca. 1000 film om året, vil du altså vide, at dette er temmelig vidt overdrevet. Sandheden er, at der er en mere overskuelig filmproduktion - som dog stadig, så vidt jeg kan se, vil vedblive at være stadig vanskeligere at komme uden om, selv for os i Vesten.
